Nike has come out with an ad congratulating Tiger Woods for regaining his position as the top-ranked golfer in the world. The ad was posted to Facebook and Twitter. There are, it seems, two ways of looking at this: That it is possible to be forgiven for one’s sins and that one can move past one’s own transgressions. On the other hand, this could be interpreted as Nike absolving Woods’ sins (which included a very public case of adultery) all by (once again) being the world’s #1 golfer. Forgiveness, it seems to Nike, is a matter of simply winning––not contrition. Moreover, the ad seems to be self-congratulatory; as if Nike is patting itself on the back for standing by Woods while his life (and endorsements) fell to pieces.
