When to (And When Not to) Air a Crash Video

The clip above, posted by celebrity news website TMZ, was allegedly shot by a bystander immediately after the tragic bus crash involving comedian Tracy Morgan. Fellow comedian Ardie Fuqua is reportedly being removed from the damaged bus in the video. He remains in critical condition.

Writing for The Daily Beast Dean Obeidallah called posting the video to TMZ’s website a case of “tragedy porn.” This isn’t the first time such video has been discussed on this blog. See, for example, the recent case involving the video posted to Facebook and run by the Tampa Bay Times.

Do you agree with Obeidallah? What about the media’s typical response to this sort thing: that it’s the public who creates the need for this, and the media outlets are merely fulfilling demand? Many thanks to my student Michael Kotrous for finding this video.
